Reviewing Waikiki’s Many Changes
Our first trip to Hawaii was in 1982. Waikiki in those days had puka shell vendors on every corner, sidewalks so crowded you couldn’t move, no place on the beach for our mat and “girls of the night” up and down the streets. I can’t believe it is the same place today. Now it is a wonderful place to spend some time, not just connections at the airport to get to Paradise – Waikiki is part of Paradise.
The south end of Kalakaua Avenue is right across the street from the beach. There are no hotels on the beach in that area. We stayed at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort. The area is quiet and easy walking all along the beach. We could grab a picnic lunch at any “ABC Store” and head into the sand and picnic tables. Even taking rolls and coffee over in the morning was a treat. In the evening there are concerts on the beach and lots of activities. The zoo is at this end of Waikiki.
Waikiki’s International Marketplace
The International Marketplace is taking on a new look. Closing in 2014, it is making way for a new premier shopping mall, set to open in August of 2016. Although the closing of the open air marketplace marks the end of an era, the banyan tree is still there, reminding us of of days gone by.
Another recent surprise is what has happened to Lewers with the Waikiki Beach Walk. Many of the old hotels have been torn down and a whole new shopping/eating area has been developed. Several new hotels are also in that area. Here you are close to Fort Durussy and that beautiful grassy area that goes down into the sand. A great condo butts up to the park area and you walk right into the sand.
A place to stay in Waikiki for every budget…
Whatever your budget, there is a property for you on Waikiki. All the name brands of hotels are here as well as some lower priced properties. Here are some considerations when looking at hotels in the Waikiki area:
- What view of the ocean do you want?
- How far are you willing to walk to get into the sand?
- Do you want a condo so you can cook some of your own meals?
- Is it a special occasion you are celebrating?
- What kind of activities do you enjoy?
Waikiki is always changing to make your vacation the trip of a lifetime…book your trip today.
